Nestled deep within the Trường Sơn mountains and at the heart of Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng National Park, Phong Nha Cave is not only one of the most celebrated destinations in Quảng Bình province, but also a symbol of nature’s mystique and layers of history carved into ancient limestone walls. Beyond its awe-inspiring stalactite formations, Phong Nha holds precious cultural imprints – from ancient Chăm civilisations to early Western scientific expeditions.
Where is Phong Nha Cave located?
Phong Nha Cave lies in Phong Nha township, Bố Trạch district, Quảng Bình province – around 45 km northwest of Đồng Hới city. The cave sits within the core zone of Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng National Park, which has been recognised as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2003, with an extended designation granted in 2015.
Discovery and Exploration of Phong Nha Cave
The name “Phong Nha” first appeared in the 1555 geographical chronicle Ô Châu Cận Lục by Dương Văn An, which describes:
“Phong Nha Cave lies in Kẻ Bàng Mountain, its mouth opens into the mountain, and inside are strange rock formations shaped like dragons, phoenixes, lions, tigers, and elephants…”
Long before the French colonial era, the ancient Chăm people had already visited the cave, leaving behind Sanskrit inscriptions carved into the rock at the cave entrance – still visible today, bearing witness to a sacred legacy.
In the early 20th century, French explorers began paying close attention to the site. In 1899, engineer M.E. Roque and archaeologist Paul Paris became the first to conduct surveys and photography, documenting Phong Nha as a subterranean marvel. Later, in 1990 and 1992, the British Cave Research Association (BCRA) conducted detailed exploration, mapping the cave to a length of 7,729 metres, ushering in a new era of cave tourism in Vietnam.
Why is Phong Nha hailed as “The First-Ranked Cave Wonder”?
Phong Nha Cave has earned its revered status thanks to seven outstanding features, acclaimed by international explorers and journals:
- The highest and widest cave entrance – measuring 20–25 metres wide and around 10 metres high, offering a majestic gateway.
- One of the longest underground rivers in the world – stretching nearly 8 km through the cave
- The most beautiful subterranean lakes – emerald waters that shimmer in ethereal light.
- The most expansive and stunning dry cave sections – showcasing dramatic space and intricate formations.
- The most magnificent stalactites and stalagmites – sparkling with colour and fantastical shapes.
- The longest underground river in Vietnam – at around 1,500 metres in the accessible section.
- The widest and most scenic underground sandbanks and rock beaches – perfect for mid-tour stops.
In addition, cultural relics like Chăm script inscriptions in Bi Ký Cave reflect a human presence dating back over a thousand years.
