Explore its mysterious depths before concluding your adventure at the Trộ Mơng Ranger Station.
Option 2: Take the reverse path, starting at Trộ Mơng Ranger Station and finishing at the Phong Nha Cave Boat Station.
The Origins of Chày River and Dark Cave’s Name
The name "Chày River" comes from its origin—a majestic waterfall called Chày. According to local lore, the sound of water cascading from the falls resembles the rhythmic pounding of pestles grinding rice. With its mesmerizing jade-green waters surrounded by lush forests and majestic mountains, Chày River offers a scene so picturesque, it feels like stepping into a watercolor painting.
Dark Cave is part of the magnificent Phong Nha-Ke Bang cave system, a wonder of nature in Quang Binh. With a depth of 20 meters and a height of 40 meters, the Dark Cave has become a sought-after destination for adventurers and exploration enthusiasts. Its name, “Dark Cave,” is no coincidence—visitors often describe the “thick darkness” at the entrance as almost tangible, a shadowy veil that invites you to reach out and touch it.
Adventures at Chay River - Dark Cave
Zipline: A free-fall thrill in the heart of the jungle
The adventure at Chay River – Dark Cave begins with an exhilarating challenge: ziplining. This is the longest and most modern zipline route in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang area.
From a lofty observation platform, you launch yourself into the air and glide above the jade-green waters of the Chay River. With the wind rushing past your face and a sweeping 360-degree view of the untouched primary forest, all stress seems to disappear, leaving only a sense of pure freedom.

Kayaking and entering the “darkness” of Dark Cave
After the aerial adventure, you continue the journey by kayak, paddling along the Chay River towards the entrance of Dark Cave.
True to its name, Dark Cave has no artificial lighting system. Each visitor is equipped with a headlamp and a life jacket. Walking deeper into the cave on your own feet, touching the rough rock walls, and listening to the sound of dripping water in the silent darkness creates a genuine caving experience that awakens every sense.

Natural mud bathing: A one-of-a-kind underground “spa” therapy
The highlight of the Dark Cave tour is undoubtedly the natural mud bath area. This is a pure and pristine mineral mud formed through the erosion and sedimentation of limestone over millions of years.
Why is the mud in Dark Cave good for your health?
The mud here is exceptionally fine and rich in minerals. Soaking in it not only helps to relieve stress and relax the muscles after physical activity, but also exfoliates the skin, smooths it, and may help support relief from joint discomfort.
A unique experience:
Thanks to its special mineral density, you can easily float on the mud without much effort — a fascinating sensation, rather like drifting in the Dead Sea.
In addition, Dark Cave lies right beside the river, so the humidity inside is quite high. This creates mossy layers on parts of the stalactites. Once inside, you will feel the grandeur of nature. It is also a place where you can freely explore various ecosystems and discover ancient fossil formations.

Cuisine at Chay River – Dark Cave
Enjoy a truly satisfying meal at Dark Cave with a colourful Vietnamese shared food tray. You can savour the signature grilled chicken, along with a variety of equally delicious and distinctive side dishes.
You may also order a set combo meal featuring a wider range of local specialities, such as grilled ribs, wild forest vegetables, sticky rice, and stream fish, among others.
Essential safety tips you should know
Clothing: You should only wear swimwear (bikini for women and swimming trunks for men). The mud is very fine and sticks firmly to the body, so wearing long clothing will make movement difficult and cleaning up afterwards much harder.
Electronic devices: Do not bring mobile phones or cameras that are not waterproof. It is best to use a GoPro or a specialised waterproof bag.
Health: This is a physically demanding tour involving ziplining, climbing, and wading through water. If you have a history of cardiovascular problems or a severe fear of darkness, you should think carefully before joining.
Follow instructions: Always wear your life jacket and follow the guidance of the tour guides to ensure maximum safety while moving through the narrow cave passages.
