The Semi-Wild Primate Zone is located near kilometer 4 on Road 20, about 5 kilometers from the headquarters of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and 8 kilometers from the tourism center. This unique sanctuary was established as part of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang Conservation Project, generously supported by Cologne Zoo and the Frankfurt Zoological Society.
Nestled amidst the verdant embrace of nature, this semi-wild haven offers a harmonious blend of preservation and wilderness, where the captivating world of primates thrives under careful stewardship and the spirit of conservation comes alive.
The semi-wild enclosure project dedicated to primates, valued at $98,000, is situated in the Nui Doi area of Phong Nha-Ke Bang and spans an impressive 18 hectares. The construction process was meticulously carried out to preserve the native vegetation, which serves as a natural food source for the primates.
This carefully designed habitat harmonizes with the environment, reflecting a commitment to conserving the delicate balance of nature while providing these primates a space to thrive in conditions close to their natural ecosystem.
Currently, only a few locations in Vietnam have established wildlife rescue centers, including Hanoi (Soc Son), Ho Chi Minh City (Cu Chi), Lao Cai (Hoang Lien Son), Vinh Phuc (Tam Dao), Ninh Binh (Cuc Phuong), Nghe An (Pu Mat), and Quang Binh (Phong Nha-Ke Bang).
Bernhard Forster, a primate specialist from the Frankfurt Zoological Society, has been leading this project for the past three years. He shared his thoughts: 'Phong Nha-Ke Bang was chosen for this primate project because of its remarkable global biological discoveries. This vast region is home to ten primate species, including the rare Ha Tinh langur and red-shanked douc langur. The area offers a rich natural habitat with ample food sources for primates to thrive, making it an ideal location for this initiative.'
The Semi-Wild Zone, part of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang Conservation Project, serves as a sanctuary for the reintroduction of primates such as the Ha Tinh langur and red-shanked douc langur, both bred at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center. Here, the primates gradually acclimate to a natural environment, offering them a chance to reintegrate into the wild. Over time, the population within this semi-wild habitat has grown significantly. Visitors to the zone can observe these primates engaging in their natural behaviors within a near-wild setting.
According to Mr. Pagel, Director of Cologne Zoo in Germany, this semi-wild primate sanctuary is truly one-of-a-kind. Its uniqueness lies in its location, built right in the native homeland of these rare and precious primates.
