07:30 – 07:45 | Pick-up in Dong Hoi
Phong Nha Viet’s vehicle and tour guide pick guests up from hotels in central Dong Hoi City. The group then departs for Quang Tri along National Highway 1A.
On the way, the guide gives an introduction to Quang Tri Province, the former Demilitarised Zone, the 17th Parallel and the special role this region played in Vietnamese history.
Stop 1: Vinh Moc Tunnels
The group visits Vinh Moc Tunnels, one of the most remarkable tunnel systems in Central Vietnam. This solid and cleverly designed underground network was once used by the soldiers and local people of Vinh Linh for living, sheltering and resisting during the years of intense war.
Here, visitors can walk through the tunnels and learn how local people organised life underground, including living spaces, wells, kitchens, meeting rooms and communal areas. This site offers a vivid insight into the endurance, resilience and determination of the people of Quang Tri.
Stop 2: Hien Luong Bridge – Ben Hai River – 17th Parallel
The journey continues to Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River, a powerful symbol of the division of Vietnam after the Geneva Accords of 1954.
The Ben Hai River and Hien Luong Bridge once lay along the 17th Parallel, the temporary dividing line between North and South Vietnam. Today, the site stands as a symbol of reunification, reconciliation and peace.
Visitors explore the historical complex and hear stories about the former border, Hien Luong Flag Tower and the years when the country was divided.
Stop 3: Truong Son National Cemetery
The group continues along the Ho Chi Minh Trail to Truong Son National Cemetery, one of the largest and most sacred war cemeteries in Vietnam.
This is the resting place of more than 10,000 fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives along the legendary Truong Son route. Visitors offer incense at the central memorial, take a moment of silence and pay tribute to those who gave their lives for the independence and freedom of the country.
This is one of the most meaningful stops on the DMZ journey, helping visitors reflect more deeply on the value of peace today.
12:00 | Lunch in Quang Tri
The group enjoys lunch at a local restaurant in Quang Tri. After lunch, guests have a short rest before continuing towards Quang Tri Town.
13:30 | Visit Quang Tri Citadel
The group visits Quang Tri Citadel, a special historical relic closely associated with the 81-day battle in the summer of 1972.
Here, visitors offer incense at the central memorial, explore the citadel grounds, visit the bell tower and museum, and listen to stories about the “Red Fiery Summer” on the land of Quang Tri.
Quang Tri Citadel is not only a historical site. It is also a sacred memorial space, where every step recalls sacrifice, courage and the Vietnamese people’s aspiration for peace.
Additional sites along the route
Depending on time, traffic and actual conditions, the group may stop at or listen to the guide’s commentary about other DMZ-related sites, including:
Doc Mieu Base, an important former military base in the old defence system.
Thach Han River, a river closely linked to the tragic memory of Quang Tri Citadel.
Thach Han Bridge and nearby memorial symbols dedicated to youth, sacrifice and the hope for peace in Quang Tri.
15:30 | Depart for Hue
After completing the visit in Quang Tri, the group continues to Hue City.
On the way, visitors can relax, enjoy the scenery of Central Vietnam and hear more from the guide about the Central Vietnam Heritage Road connecting Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Hue.
17:00 | Drop-off in Hue City
The vehicle and guide drop guests off in central Hue City or at a suitable meeting point within the city. The Dong Hoi – Quang Tri DMZ – Hue tour ends. Phong Nha Viet says goodbye and hopes to welcome guests again on future journeys.
