Historical Value

The history of Hoi An is a profound and rich chapter, reflecting the intersection and convergence of many cultures, from East to West region, over thousands of years. From a small fishing village, Hoi An developed into one of the busiest commercial centers in Southeast Asia from the 15th to the 19th centuries, before gradually losing its position due to changes in the flow of the Thu Bon River and the development of new seaports such as Da Nang.

Early Development Phase: Hoi An's history dates back at least 2000 years ago under the Sa Huynh civilization, an ancient culture in Central Vietnam. Later, from the 7th to the 10th centuries, this area became part of Champa, with advanced civilization and strong development in maritime trade.

Peak Commercial Period: From the 15th century, Hoi An became an important international trading port, facilitating trade between Vietnam and many countries and territories such as Japan, China, India, and European countries. Japanese, Chinese, and other international traders established their own towns and guildhalls, creating a multicultural community reflected in the architecture, culture, and cuisine of Hoi An in the present day.

Decline: By the late 19th century, due to changes in geography and politics, as well as the development of the nearby port of Da Nang, Hoi An gradually lost its position as a bustling commercial port. Economic decline helped preserve the ancient appearance of the old town, while modernization in many other places did not strongly impact Hoi An.

Cultural Values

Unique Architecture: Ancient houses, Japanese covered bridges, built since the 16th century, or the Cantonese Assembly Hall... each structure tells a long history, a harmonious combination of Eastern and Western cultures.
