Ruc Mon Cave One-Day Adventure Tour — Trekking, Caving & Kayaking

General information

Ruc Mon Cave lies in the buffer-zone area associated with Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park. It stands out for its impressive cave system, a clear underground river, and a largely intact forest-and-mountain landscape.

Beyond nature, Ruc Mon is also connected to the historical legacy of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the distinctive culture of the Chut ethnic community. The journey to the cave takes you across peaceful fields, cool streams and quiet forest paths—an experience that feels genuinely exploratory and different from standard sightseeing caves.

With a mix of trekking, dry-cave conquest, underground river sections and kayaking, Ruc Mon is an ideal choice for travellers who want a more “raw” way to experience the Phong Nha–Ke Bang karst landscape

Schedule

RỤC MÒN ADVENTURE – 1 DAY

07:30–08:00: Pick-up from hotels in the Phong Nha area. Guests then gather at the Rục Mòn Adventure office for a tour briefing, health check and equipment preparation.

The 45-kilometre journey to Rục Mòn Cave in Trường Hóa follows the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail. Along the way, guests pass Khe Gát Airfield, a site associated with important wartime events, before crossing Đá Đẽo Pass, once a heavily contested section of the Trường Sơn route.

09:30: Arrive at Yên Phú Village, home to the Chứt ethnic community. Visit Yên Phú Lake and the surrounding landscape featured in Kong: Skull Island, then begin a five-kilometre trek through fields, local villages and clear streams.

This is a relatively gentle trekking route, ideal for travellers wishing to combine nature, local culture and cave exploration.

10:30: Arrive near the cave entrance, rest and enjoy lunch prepared by local people. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available with advance notice.

12:00: After lunch, climb a steep 300-metre trail to reach a secondary entrance to Rục Mòn Cave.

Explore the three-level dry cave system, featuring impressive stalactites, rock walls and distinctive geological formations. Some sections rise more than 10 metres and are equipped with ladders and safety ropes.

Continue down to the kayak launch point. Adventurous guests may take an optional five-metre jump into the cool underground river.

After a safety briefing and kayaking instruction, paddle for nearly one kilometre along the underground river, discovering the cave’s peaceful and mysterious interior.

16:30–17:00: Kayak back to the cave entrance, rest, change clothes and enjoy a light snack. Trek back to Yên Phú Village before returning to Phong Nha by vehicle.

RỤC MÒN EXPEDITION – 1 DAY

07:30–08:30: Pick-up from the Phong Nha area. Guests receive a safety briefing and equipment before departing for Trường Hóa.

Along the way, enjoy views of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and Đá Đẽo Pass while learning about the history and natural landscape of western Quảng Bình.

10:30–11:30: Arrive near Hóa Sơn Village, close to the Việt Nam–Laos border. Walk through the village, learn about local life and continue trekking through forest, rivers and streams to reach the cave entrance.

11:30–13:00: Rest and enjoy a local BBQ lunch. Vegetarian meals are available with advance notice.

13:00–16:00: Begin an in-depth exploration of Rục Mòn Cave. Swim and climb for approximately two kilometres inside the cave, crossing underground rivers, wet rocks and sections requiring rope assistance.
