World Environment Day 2024 – Restoring Land, Combating Drought, and Desertification

03-06-2024 00:00

On June 5, 1972, during the opening of the first World Environment Conference held in Stockholm, Sweden, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) declared June 5 as World Environment Day (WED).

In a session on December 15, 1972, the United Nations General Assembly officially adopted this resolution. Since then, more than 150 countries worldwide have participated in commemorating this day.

World Environment Day serves as an occasion to raise awareness about climate change and to emphasize the role of individuals in the cycle of life. It encourages practical actions to protect the environment and promote sustainability.

World Environment Day 2024 Theme

The theme for World Environment Day 2024 will be 'Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.'

  • Directive No. 13/CT-TTg (May 2, 2024): Strengthening carbon credit management to meet nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

Local-Level Initiatives

Each locality is encouraged to develop plans tailored to its economic, social, and ecological conditions. These include:

  • Reviewing and classifying soil quality and monitoring changes.
  • Investigating and assessing polluted or at-risk areas to ensure proper zoning.
  • Formulating and implementing plans for remediation and restoration of contaminated soils.
  • Taking proactive measures to minimize desertification and drought impacts.
