Khe Sanh – A Majestic Highland Where Nature and Daily Life Embrace
Nestled in Vietnam’s central highlands, Khe Sanh is a land where rugged nature gently blends with the quiet rhythms of everyday life.
When March arrives, this highland awakens in full bloom—bathed in the pure white of coffee flowers and the intoxicating scent of ripening fruit.
It’s not just the season of blossoms. It’s also the time when the robust red jackfruit coffee berries burst into color, transforming the hills into a vibrant, living canvas—a landscape alive with light, fragrance, and the pulse of life.

When the Hills Turn White with Blossoms
As March arrives and the spring breeze lingers across the hillsides, Khe Sanh adorns itself with a radiant coat of blossoms.
The last shy peach flowers still cling to the branches, gently giving way to waves of pure white coffee flowers that blanket the highlands. Spring’s scent drifts through winding paths and rooftops, quietly awakening this peaceful land deep in the Trường Sơn range.
Coffee flowers in Khe Sanh carry a pure, delicate beauty, fragile to the eye yet bursting with inner strength. Just after a spring shower, tender buds bloom with quiet grace, releasing a sweet, cooling fragrance that softens the gentle sunlight of early March.
It is a scent both fresh and profound—a soft note in the grand symphony of the highland forest.
Locals here often say that when coffee blossoms cover the sky in white, it’s nature’s promise of a fruitful season ahead.
The entire region stirs with quiet excitement, waiting for the cherries to ripen. Soon, bold red berries will be harvested, and the rich aroma of Khe Sanh’s coffee will travel far and wide—carrying with it the true essence of the mountains.

March – The Season of Blossoms and Berries
This March, Khe Sanh is not only draped in the pristine white of Arabica coffee blossoms, but also ablaze with the brilliant red of ripened jackfruit coffee cherries.
Along the mountain slopes, clusters of glossy red berries stand out against the deep green foliage, painting a breathtaking portrait of nature.
It’s the perfect time for visitors to both marvel at the blooming flowers and witness firsthand the harvest season of jackfruit coffee—one of the region’s most distinctive crops.
Jackfruit coffee (coffea excelsa), a unique variety native to Central and South America, was introduced to Vietnam during the French colonial era.
It thrives in select highland regions, with Khe Sanh being among the most ideal thanks to its cool climate, fertile red basalt soil, and elevations ranging from 600 to 800 meters above sea level. These natural advantages make Khe Sanh one of the top producers of high-quality jackfruit coffee in Vietnam.
Unlike more common varieties like Arabica (cà phê chè) or Robusta (cà phê vối), jackfruit coffee trees are taller, with broader canopies and thick, leathery leaves resembling those of a jackfruit tree. This allows them to withstand harsher, drier conditions.
With a deep-rooting system, they draw water from underground sources, making them remarkably resilient to drought.
The flowering season for jackfruit coffee typically begins with the first rains—later than Arabica and Robusta, which usually bloom between February and March.
Jackfruit coffee flowers don’t bloom in large, showy clusters. Instead, they grow in small groups hugging the trunk and branches—subtle, yet striking in their own way.
In contrast, Arabica and Robusta trees burst into bloom all at once, blanketing entire hillsides in white, like soft clouds floating across the highlands.

It’s the gentle murmur of streams weaving through forest edges.
It’s the morning mist curling softly over cold rooftops.
It’s a humble meal by the glowing fire, and a quiet sip of freshly roasted coffee as birds sing somewhere in the canopy above.

Seeking Climate Justice: Acknowledging Historical Truths
On World Environment Day, Professor Joyeeta Gupta (simulated) offers a powerful lens through which to examine the global climate crisis—one grounded in historical truths and justice. She argues that climate change is not merely a consequence of industrial development or population growth, but the product of a fundamentally unjust and unsustainable development model rooted in colonial legacies.
